A few days after the digital press conference, the new Subaru Impreza e-BOXER received 5 stars from the independent road safety organization EuroNCAP. This is a confirmation of the maximum rating awarded to the car back in 2017. The fifth generation of the model is a worthy successor to the legendary Subaru Impreza. The new development, the first-of-its-kind Impreza e-BOXER, aims to offer unsurpassed collision safety, providing complete confidence in combination with the sporty handling of the Impreza.
Excellent driving behavior and efficiency with the e-BOXER system
The model is equipped with a new generation powertrain that combines an electric motor with two of Subaru’s core technologies: a BOXER engine and a symmetrical all-wheel drive Symmetrical AWD.The new model retains the remarkable combination of the S-AWD system with the new e-BOXER power unit. It includes a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder direct injection engine and horizontally opposite pistons. 80% of the components used in it are new. It is combined with an electric motor and a specially adapted Lineartronic transmission, providing smooth and 30% more linear and faster acceleration, as well as responsive torque.
Subaru’s e-BOXER system adjusts the ratio between the power supplied by the specially developed 2.0-liter direct injection engine (DI) and that provided by the electric motor according to driving conditions, switching between 3 drive modes: Engine driving /, Drive with the engine /, EV / Electric drive /, Motor Assist driving / Drive with supporting electric motor /.
When starting or driving at low speed, the car is powered only by the electric motor, achieving silent operation with zero emissions. Depending on the condition of the car and the battery, in fully electric mode it can travel up to about 1.6 km at speeds up to 40 km / h. When driving at moderate speeds, the combined power of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor provides fast, linear and fuel-saving acceleration, while at high speeds the 2.0-liter BOXER with direct injection simultaneously drives the car and charges the battery.
The e-BOXER system provides improved fuel consumption in urban conditions, and depending on the driving style, fuel consumption can be reduced by up to 10% compared to the previous version with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine.
The e-BOXER system eliminates the unnatural braking sensation typical of hybrid or electric vehicles, providing a quick response and a feeling of natural braking. The brakes are easy to operate and respond quickly and linearly to pedal pressure, giving the driver confidence. This is especially convenient when driving in urban conditions with frequent stops and starts, as it makes driving more enjoyable and relaxed.
The motor system and the battery are located longitudinally on the chassis. The heavy motor is located near the center of gravity of the car, while the battery and other components are mounted above the rear axle, providing an even lower center of gravity and better weight distribution between the front and rear axles of the car.
Advanced safety technologies
Impreza e-BOXER is safer than ever, equipped with new advanced safety technologies. Standard equipment includes EyeSight driver assistance technology. A blind spot and side traffic monitoring (SRVD) system, an automatic reversing system and a front view camera have been added to the model’s safety equipment.

Impreza e-BOXER is designed to provide an optimal level of ambient visibility – “dead zones” are minimized thanks to the shape and optimized placement of the columns, as well as the use of corner glass. Visibility is excellent thanks to the thin columns, large windows and the location of the side mirrors, optimized to reduce “dead zones”.
The model features exceptional impact protection – with 40% better efficiency of energy absorption and load removal in the event of an impact. Subaru Global Platform technology includes a high-strength frame and a reinforced battery case that protects high-voltage electrical components such as the battery, DC-DC converter and inverter.
The Impreza e-BOXER is now equipped with a front view camera mounted at the bottom of the front grille. It allows the driver to check for oncoming cars or pedestrians at intersections in poor visibility conditions.
The Impreza e-BOXER is available as standard with seven airbags, including front and front front airbags, curtain side airbags, pelvic / torso side airbags and a driver’s knee airbag.
Improved dynamic driving experience
Designed to handle the harshest weather and road conditions, the compact four-wheel drive hatchback fulfills Subaru’s promise of driving pleasure, overall safety and superior strength. The all-wheel drive system lowers the car’s center of gravity by 1 mm and offers new dynamic features that provide superior handling and stability, improved hazard prevention and suspension performance, faster steering response, extremely low vibration and high level of driving comfort.
The permanent symmetrical all-wheel drive system – a trademark of Subaru cars – increases confidence and capabilities in all road conditions, and the active torque distribution system included in the standard equipment improves handling and cornering behavior. SGP significantly improves the stability of the body and chassis (resistance to lateral bending at the front + 90%, resistance to torsion + 70%, resistance to the front suspension + 70%, resistance to the rear subframe + 100%).
